In this great three part video essay Jim Emerson dissects the structure of several action scenes from The Dark Knight, Salt and The French Connection among others. He highlights how films like TDK plays havoc with the ‘rules’ of cinema to create frenetic action, where as films like Salt are at pains to orientate the viewer very specifically, both with effective results.
