What’s New in DaVinci Resolve 12.5

Resolve 12.5 new features

The latest release of DaVinci Resolve 12.5 brings with it hundreds (250) of new features and (1000+) fixes. You can download it today as part of a public beta, for the free/lite/Resolve version of the software. The Studio version will be update once the software completes the public beta process.

In this video you can get an streamlined look at the ‘most exciting new features’ in the release including UI improvements, new visual effects like lens flares and glow filters, editing improvements, retiming effects and tons and tons more. It’s a huge new step forward, and it’s all free!

Videos on New Features in Resolve

There are four new videos on the Blackmagic Design site that take you through a fairly swift overview of the new features in each area of the software, which you should check out on the official site.

Training on new features in Resolve 12.5

If you want to take a seriously deep dive – 4 and a half hours of training – into all of the new features and improvements in this massive update, then you really can’t do better than colorist Alexis Van Hurkman’s new Ripple Training title.

At $79 it isn’t a cheap option for a casual user, but if you’re a professional colorist or an editor doing a lot of grading in Resolve, it’s certainly worth the investment if you want to be sure you’re getting the very best from the software. That and not doing things ‘the old way’ when there’s a faster, easier method.

That said, you can get a 20% discount coupon if you sign up to the Ripple Training newsletter – which is worth doing anyway, just to be kept up to date on all their great, free training too – and save money.

In this training you’ll work with Blackmagic’s Fusion compositing software to create a visual effect, send it to Resolve, then bring it back again. You’ll learn how media management just became easier with Power Bins for sharing your sound effects, titles and clips among all projects you create…

And there are many improvements to grading, too. There’s new support for high-dynamic-range color, with updated scopes, an HDR Grading Mode in the node editor, and improved dual-setting Resolve Color Management. You’ll learn how the new Temperature and Tint controls make it easy to add small color tweaks, while improved Log and Contrast controls make grading in Resolve even smoother.

You’ll learn how to select multiple control points when editing Power Windows, how to apply the vastly improved Temporal noise reduction controls to fix problem clips, how to edit node trees faster than ever before, and how to use the new Reference Sizing controls and clickable Split Screen Views to compare clips and grades even more easily…

learning fusion 8

To me one of the most interesting developments is the addition of the ‘Connect to Fusion’ feature which allows you to send clips over to Fusion (now owed by BMD) to work on them further in that high end visual effects software. Damian Allen has some good thoughts on this over on Pro Video Coalition.

Fusion is a float-precision, node-based compositing application. As magical as After Effects is (no arguments here–it’s a great app), its strength lies in temporal keyframing operations. For spatial problem solving (cosmetic fixes, tracking, green screen keying, CG integration, digital environments, set extensions) you just can’t beat a node-based compositing
environment.

If you’re interested in learning more about Fusion, check out this previous, pretty long, tutorial and resources round up on Getting started with Fusion 8.

Best New Features in DaVinci Resolve 12.5

best new features in Resolve

In this free 15 minute Mixing Light.com video, colorist Robbie Carman walks through his favourite features in the new update, which gets into some of the higher-level, pro colorist improvements including in Resolve’s Colour Management, HDR, Noise Reduction and more.

If you are a paid member of Mixing Light, or want to take the free 24 hour tour which gives you access to everything, then you can also check out Dan Moran’s favourite new features and Patrick Inhofer’s ‘gems’. Both well worth a watch!

Resolve FX- I’m still learning all about the Resolve FX but it gives us a huge amount of new options. My favourites so far are the colour transform, grain, glow and lens blur. The lens blur is far far better than the built in blur when trying to achieve a realistic result. When I spoke to BMD at NAB they said they were hoping to push most of these effects to the GPU for speedy and quick finishing work.

demo of davinci resolve 12.5

Colorist Rob Bessette, who was working at the Blackmagic Design booth at NAB 2016, shares his top 5 favourite features in this recent blog post. He also shares a few thoughts on why he enjoys the process and benefits of being on the inside track with the makers of DaVinci Resolve. Also jump down the page to see a bunch of the new features in ‘tweet-form’ from Rob.

What I really get out of the experience is seeing a team work hard to make the software top of the line.  I get trained by the people who make the software.  Nobody knows it better.  I learn something new every trip, even if it is an old feature from a previous releases.  In return, they get my feedback and experience as a professional colorist.  So when the software is released publicly, I feel like I already know it better than the majority of the population.  I have a jump start on the competition and can show off new techniques and tricks I learned while at the show.  That head start can help me showcase some new skills to clients that may help me win some more work in the long run.

Resolve 12.5

Editor and Colorist Steve Hullfish shares his favourite features in this post over on Pro Video Coalition, with plenty of images to illustrate what he’s talking about.

In editing “mode,” adding these composite modes is very easy. Select a clip in the timeline and go into Inspector (command-9). In the Inspector there’s a Composite mode with a pulldown of dozens of standard choices.

In this short demo from Newshooter you can get a quick demo from Paul Saccone from Blackmagic Design on editing in Resolve 12.5

In this short but energetic video from Theo of Miesner Media demo’s his favourite two (then three, when he discovers another one) features in under 5 minutes.

In this short tutorial Theo demonstrates how to work with compound nodes to tidy up your grades.

In this longer video from a fairly sleep-deprived Alex Jordan, from LearnColorGrading.com, you can get a run through of using the new single-point tracker in Resolve and a few other of his favourite new features.

More Professional Colorists on Resolve 12.5

Colorist Rob Bessette demo’d DaVinci Resolve 12.5 at NAB 2016, at the Blackmagic booth. Here are some of the key new features he shared on Twitter. Other’s asked a few follow up questions on most of these Tweets so hit the date stamp to open up the full conversation.

If you’re asking the same questions you might want to check out this post on Affordable Colour Grading Control Surfaces, and the entire Colour Grading category on the blog for A LOT more tips, tutorials and breakdowns.

Here are some more thoughts from a few other colorists to give you a sense of what people are excited about!
